Stump Grinding Central Coast
Below-grade stump grinding across the Central Coast, from a narrow-access walk-behind for tight Woy Woy backyards to larger tracked machines for acreage stumps.
A stump left in the ground after a removal slowly becomes a nuisance. The wood holds moisture, draws termites and fungal pathogens, pushes sucker growth up through the lawn or paving, and as the roots die they shift (heaving paths, lifting pool surrounds and pulling at fence footings. On the sandy soils common near the Central Coast beaches, root movement after a removal can be faster than on heavier soils. Grinding out the stump on the same visit, or shortly after, stops all of that. We run two machines depending on access) a narrow walk-behind for older Gosford and Woy Woy homes with tight gate clearances, and a tracked self-propelled grinder for bigger jobs on open acreage blocks.
The price is driven by three things, the diameter of the stump at ground level, the species, and how deep you need it ground. Most Central Coast clients ask for 200 to 300mm below the surface, which gives enough clearance for new turf, paving sand or a shallow garden bed. If you're pouring a slab, digging a footing or replanting a large tree in the same spot, we can push that deeper to 400 or 500mm and track the larger surface roots too.
After grinding, the hole fills with a mix of fine chips, root fibre and disturbed soil. That fill slumps as the wood breaks down, so for anything that matters (turf, paving, replanting) we recommend pulling the chip out and backfilling with topsoil. We quote that as its own line if you want us to do it, or leave it for you to shovel yourself. Either way, the stump is done and the area is clear.

Stump Grinding FAQs
How deep does the grinder go?
Standard depth is 200 to 300mm below the surface, which suits new turf, paving sand or a shallow garden bed. For a footing, a concrete slab or if you're replanting another tree in the spot, we can grind to 400 to 500mm or deeper where the species and root structure allow. Tell us what's going in and we'll match the depth to it.
Will the grinder fit through a standard side gate on the Central Coast?
If the gate clears 900mm, yes. That covers nearly every standard residential block in Gosford, Woy Woy, Long Jetty and Bateau Bay. For anything narrower, or a stump inside a courtyard, we walk it on the quote and either bring in a smaller tool or look at craning the machine over.
What's in the hole when the job is done?
A mix of wood chips, root fibre and disturbed soil, roughly level with the surrounding ground. That fill drops as the wood rots, for lawn or paving we'd suggest pulling the chip and backfilling with screened topsoil. For a garden bed you can mix in compost and let it settle a season before planting anything that matters to you.
Is it cheaper to grind multiple stumps in one visit?
Yes, because the callout cost only happens once. If you have several from old removals, or a previous owner left a row along the back fence, doing them all together is the most cost-effective approach. Send through how many and rough diameters and we'll quote the lot as one job.
